Hawkeye Community College had its grand opening for its new $5.4M Automation and Robotics Center at the TechWorks Campus in downtown Waterloo.
One of the most advanced technological centers in the U.S., the Automation and Robotics Center will provide training focusing on advanced smart factories, robotics, and mechatronics technologies.
During the ceremony, Hawkeye announced its award of a $5M grant from the Department of Labor for the Building Pathways to Infrastructure Jobs Grant Program. The investment will allow for the design, development, and growth of training programs with work-based learning opportunities to prepare job seekers for high-demand career pathways in advanced manufacturing, information technology, and professional, scientific, and technical service occupations.
Western Nevada College’s Realizing Opportunities for the American Dream to Succeed (ROADS) program is the result of a collaboration with the Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), offering a transformative higher education experience.
ROADS equips underemployed and unemployed individuals with the essential tools for meaningful employment. By addressing financial obstacles and educational barriers, the program empowers students to concentrate on workforce training by providing support such as gas cards, childcare reimbursements, rent assistance, and car repair coverage.
The program connects students to resources within the college and the community that can help them persist through their education. Moreover, this partnership tailors educational training and professional skills development to match the demands of high-growth sectors such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, CDL, and welding.
Alongside this, mentorship plays a pivotal role, fostering both personal and professional growth. As participants complete their individualized training, a dedicated ROADS coordinator facilitates interviews with local businesses, ensuring a seamless transition into the careers of their choice. With ROADS, every path leads to success, making it a beacon of hope for individuals seeking to overcome employment challenges.
